PERSONALITY
Vigorous youth is a term that can label Elena. Brimming potential. Also at times a bumbling boob, if we're going to go that far, once upon a time. Elena is cheerful and dutiful, loyal to a fault and what she's got the most of is moxie and determination.
She joins the Turks after being stuck on what you could be called the bench, or the reserves. Already eager to please and hungry to show up her elder sister who was once a Turk herself, one could almost call her drive to become a better Turk ambitious, if not headstrong to boot. She has a lot to prove and shoes to fill and she refuses to let anyone down.
She proceeds to kind of let everyone down. See the thing about Elena during the game's canon is, she's amazingly determined, skilled-- and has the superpower of self sabotage. Multiple times in game canon she has basically put her foot in her mouth (spilling the beans in the Mythril mine exactly WHERE they were going to go looking for Sephiroth) (gets gun-ho about finishing the mission on 'vacation', gets captured instead) (admits she's guarding something 'special' to her enemies, goes after her enemies instead) much to her great shame (she gets rather in the dumps and glum about it, and needs cheering up from her comrades).
During the events of the game her naivety is fresh-- she's bright eyed and bushy tailed with a cheery disposition to match. Though she's got a more serious and 'professional' outlook on her work than her more aloof coworkers, beneath the nervousness of Expectations and the weight of the Past, Elena's got a rather fiery disposition when she gets started. If injustice is being done in front of her, if her friends are being hurt, she will rush in with great aim and awful one liners (has, only to fall down a mountain, all under misunderstanding, ran right into it without thinking of the consequences).
During her service in the rank of the Turks Elena learns to let go of the reins of control and relaxes a bit more when it comes to work; it comes from experience in the field and you know, the world almost ending because your boss kind of wanted to see how it panned out and then play the good guy in the middle. In the two years between FF7 and Advent Children she's had to grow up a lot-- she saw the planet almost die, because of the people she works for and is loyal to unto death, and the trust of the people she 'served' around her was shattered.
She and her comrades were forced to pick up the pieces, in shame and wrapped up in guilt-- but their boss wouldn't let them bow their heads. This is where that determination comes in; she tirelessly helps to repair the damage they'd wrought to the planet-- in the destructive aftermath she sees more of the kindness, and the hurt, of the people than their company had ever shown the world. And she doesn't shrink back for a second. Not even under orders to go back to where it all ended-- not even under torture when new enemies held her captive. Tortured, almost dead, saved by a former enemy and unsure if she would live, Elena stands back up just in time to save the day. Again.
Elena is cheerful, bright, obnoxiously driven and can still be little bit of a stickler for the rules, headstrong and fierce-- but she will never, ever give up. Maybe it's a Turk trait, it's probably just an Elena trait that's been polished in the ranks of the Turks. If you can give her anything, it's credit when it comes to that shining determination.
She also spills less coffee after 2 years.
HISTORY
Born into a family that was already eating up ShinRa's opportunities most likely somewhere below the plate, Elena grew up with an older sister who outperformed her at seemingly everything. Eventually she'd enroll in ShinRa military academy, where their father taught. By this time her sister had become a Turk, to her chagrin, and Elena had obtained a job at a bar in Wall Market. During this time there was an incident with the first incarnation of the AVALANCHE terrorist group-- Elena gets swept up into it when she observes the enemy during a mission. Instead of informing the Turks at the time, she tails them.
She later gets kidnapped for witnessing their activities and is held for ransom. She takes on one of her captors herself until the Turks come to her rescue and is so impressed that she vows to become a Turk herself.
Fast forward at least 5 years and so starts the war against Sephiroth and Jenova. After the destruction of the 7 sector plate, Elena is made a full fledged Turk and trapaises the world to help her comrades save ShinRa, save the world, and eventually come to maturity and redemption.
Two years later Sephiroth once again begins to make his reunion plans via the control of three remnants of his. Elena is captured by said remnants during a mission to retrieve the last pieces of Jenova, along with Tseng, the director of the Turks. The two are held hostage in exchange for the remainders of Jenova, tortured for information and eventually freed by former Turk Vincent Valentine.
It is unknown where they remain during their recovery, but by the time the entire incident comes to a close, she and Tseng have returned to the ranks of the Turks just in time to rescue President of ShinRa Rufus Shinra. Post this incident the Turks and ShinRa company are left to pick up the pieces and try to salvage the trust of the entire planet for their hand in the incidents.
